Finding the harmony – weather and fragrances

How to choose perfumes

A good fragrance can create an atmosphere of elegance, romance, and intrigue surrounding the wearer. But it’s not as straightforward to choose a scent that perfectly reflects your personality as well as harmonize with the weather. Also, it’s very common that with the onset of a new season, many people switch up their wardrobe and their fragrances.

Perfumes are just aromatic molecules contained in a bottle. When it’s applied to the skin, it starts to evaporate and releases the aroma into the air. The rate of evaporation and dissipation is dictated by the temperature on your skin and also that of the air. Particularly, in tropical climates, like in India, heat and humidity during summers can affect the performance of the fragrance on the skin and affect its longevity.

The lighter scents like citrusy, peppery, herbal, and light fruity notes are the first to hit the nose and make up the top notes. And then it’s the floral, stronger fruity, and spicy heart notes that round up with woody, ambery, musky, and leathery base notes to create the full body of the fragrance. You may gravitate towards lighter fragrances in warmer weather, and in cooler weather, you may prefer heavier fragrances. Let’s try to break it down.

Fresh, green, aqua, and breezy notes are perfect for hot summer days. Think of the super-popular Aqua Di Gio, Rasasi Al Wisam Day, and Nautica Voyage and in traditional Indian perfumery Rooh Khas and Jannatul Firdaus. Light florals like bergamot, jasmine, orange blossoms work best for hot summer nights. Think Dior Fahrenheit, Dior Sauvage, and Ajmal Blu. Perfect for the margarita season and t-shirt weather.

Winter is perhaps the best time for fragrance lovers. Cold temperatures allow all of the sophisticated notes the time they need to completely articulate themselves and hence the scent lingers on for a longer time. Also, heavier scents are much more capable of invading through the clothes and meeting the air outside during winter. For winter days, the multidimensional sandalwood which has both sweet and spicy characteristics and the earthy patchouli works best while people generally fancy exotic oriental scents, vanilla, incense, spices, amber, and leather notes during chilly winter nights. Some good options for winter daytime are Paco Rabanne One Million, Versace Dylan Blue, Ajmal’s Sandalia Mumtaz for winter days, and Rasasi La Yuqawam, Bvlgari Man in Black and Zara 9.0 for chilly winter nights.
